Guidelines
Make room for honest thoughts. Protect the people behind them.
TypeUps is built for thoughts that are unfinished, ordinary, joyful, awkward, angry, intimate, political or difficult to say aloud. We do not require every thought to be cheerful, agreeable or comfortable.
The line is harm. You may express a legal thought or feeling. You may not use TypeUps to threaten, exploit, expose or deliberately harm someone.
What belongs here
TypeUps welcomes:
- Everyday observations and small moments.
- Joy, sadness, loneliness, uncertainty, longing and mixed feelings.
- Thoughts about family, parenting, friendship, relationships, school and work.
- Anger, frustration and strong language that do not become a credible threat or targeted abuse.
- Political opinions and criticism that do not promote hatred, terrorism or violence.
- Legal thoughts about attraction, sexuality and consensual adult relationships.
- Respectful praise or criticism of public figures.
- Questions, contradictions and thoughts that do not have a neat conclusion.
- Thoughts in languages other than English.
Different kinds of content may be kept in different parts of the recommendation system. Allowing a thought does not mean it must appear on Home or inside every kind of Journey.
Adult and sexual thoughts
Legal thoughts about attraction, desire, sex and consensual adult relationships may be allowed. They may be classified as sensitive and kept separate from Home and unrelated ordinary Journeys.
TypeUps distinguishes between ordinary or non-graphic sexual expression and clearly explicit adult content:
- Relationship, dating, attraction, body-confidence and non-graphic desire thoughts do not require an adult-content confirmation merely because they mention attraction or sex.
- Clearly explicit descriptions of sexual acts or fetish content require an 18-plus confirmation before they can be posted or displayed.
- No sexual thought should be used in Home rotation, promotional copy or an unrelated ordinary Journey merely because it is legal.
Never post:
- Sexual content involving, describing or targeting anyone under 18.
- Non-consensual sexual content, exploitation or instructions for abuse.
- Intimate images or identifying sexual information about another person.
- Sexual content that identifies or provides contact details for a private person.
- Solicitation, trafficking or illegal sexual services.
Anger is allowed. Threats are not.
You may write that you are furious, hate a situation or wish things were different. Strong feelings and profanity are not automatically prohibited.
Do not post a credible threat, plan or intention to harm a person or group. Do not encourage another person to commit violence, provide instructions for violent wrongdoing or identify a private target in a way that increases the risk of harm.
Political thoughts
Political support, disagreement, criticism and frustration are allowed. Political thoughts may be classified and separated from general discovery so that they do not take over unrelated Journeys.
We do not allow terrorist praise or recruitment, operational extremist content, targeted hate, credible threats, voter suppression instructions or calls for violence.
Public figures and private people
You may name and discuss widely recognised public figures, including artists, athletes and politicians. Praise, disagreement and criticism are allowed when they otherwise follow these Guidelines.
Do not expose private people. Do not post someone's address, private email, telephone number, account credentials, financial details, private health information or other identifying information that could place them at risk. A person's name combined with location, workplace, school or contact details may also be identifying and can be removed.
Safety rules
The following are not allowed:
- Sexual content involving minors or the sexualisation of minors.
- Credible threats, instructions for violence or targeted incitement.
- Terrorist recruitment, operational assistance or praise intended to advance violent extremism.
- Encouragement or instructions for suicide or self-harm.
- Hate or dehumanisation targeting protected characteristics.
- Non-consensual sexual content, trafficking or exploitation.
- Doxxing, exposed credentials or dangerous personal information.
- Detailed instructions that meaningfully facilitate serious wrongdoing.
- Spam, scams, commercial solicitation or coordinated manipulation.
- Malware, attempts to attack TypeUps or efforts to bypass its safeguards.
When someone is struggling
People may write honestly about pain, hopelessness, recovery or past self-harm. TypeUps may limit the distribution of highly distressing content while still allowing a person to express what they feel.
Content that encourages, romanticises or gives instructions for suicide or self-harm is not allowed.
TypeUps is not an emergency service. If you or someone else may be in immediate danger, contact local emergency services. In the United States or Canada, call or text 988. In New Zealand, call or text 1737 for support, or call 111 in an emergency.
How moderation works
A thought may be:
- Allowed, meaning it can participate in ordinary placement and retrieval.
- Limited, meaning it can be published but is kept out of Home or unrelated ordinary Journeys.
- Held for review, meaning it is not publicly retrievable while a decision is pending.
- Rejected or removed, meaning it is not made public or is no longer publicly available.
TypeUps uses both automated analysis and deterministic safety rules. Automated systems can make mistakes. Classification confidence may help internal quality review, but an ordinary safe thought should not fail merely because two themes are close.
Reporting
Use the menu beside a thought to report content that may break these Guidelines. Reporting is for safety and policy concerns, not for thoughts you merely disagree with.
Use Feedback to report a product problem, request a feature or send general comments.
The short version
Say what you genuinely think. Do not expose, threaten, exploit or deliberately endanger another person.
